‘G’ on top (and looking the real deal)

OK, so it’s looking increasingly like we may have called this one wrong. Geraint Thomas is looking every bit the Champion and if he does hold it together till Paris, it will be massively well deserved. History says one writes off Chris Froome at one’s peril but maybe 4 straight Grand Tours and his extraordinary achievement on the Giro is now telling its toll, to say nothing of all the “off bike” stuff.

Today’s ‘ground breaking’ stage – 65km and an F1 grid start – got off to the widely predicted damp squib first few kilometres as the riders simply formed up as they would normally do and proceeded to ride as if a standard stage. But the real fireworks came at the end with Froome being dropped on the final climb and losing time as Geraint Thomas showed terrific strength not only over Froome, but over his closest rival Dumoulin as well.

There’s still plenty of riding to go but it is looking more and more likely that Thomas will be in Yellow come Paris. If that’s the case, then we’re happy to have been wrong. He would be a worthy champion indeed. Fingers crossed that whatever happens, its bike racing that decides the outcome and not anything else.
