Natalie wins Bronze at the British Sprint Championships Liverpool

by Natalie Milne

I travelled down to Liverpool for the British Sprint Champs on the Friday with Triathlon Scotland and their squad of athletes. Saturday was mainly spent watching the Olympics with some training in between. This was my second week of racing in a row. Despite feeling a bit tired I was feeling confident as this was my 7th sprint race of the year.

It was chalk and cheese compared to the previous weekend at the World University Championships in Nyon, Switzerland. In Liverpool, we had calm water as we were swimming in a dock with wetsuits and the added bonus of jellyfish. I started far right and managed to get clear water from the start. It was a quick swim as there were many juniors in the race since it was their selection race for the world triathlon championships. I exited the water and ran hard into transition to get my bike.

Jessica Learmouth and Sophie Coldwell were off the front and a fairly big chasing group formed including a couple of Aussies who were over in the UK racing. The majority of us were taking our turns and working hard to close the gap the front two girls. We were making up time on the long out and back. Unfortunately, on each of the two dead turns on every lap we would then lose the time we had made up. This was purely because the course narrowed and it was only possible to turn in single file rather than as a group. Once we had completed the last of four laps it was time to get ready to run.

With plenty of juniors in our pack I knew that it was important to enter transition near the front. Into transition and it was a quick change into my running shoes and out onto the run course. I soon settled into a steady rhythm building into each lap. I finished 3rd British senior and 9th overall which I was delighted with. This was my first time on a British podium and definitely another step in the right direction.
