Bauke Mollema – the quiet Man of the Peleton

Before we talk about Bauke Mollema, watching Peter Sagan these last ten days has been quite an exhausting experience. And that’s before we even talk about cycling. In the preview show on ITV 4 for this year’s edition of the Tour De France, we were subjected to, sorry, enchanted by a short film on the Slovakian showman. This included (and no, I am not making this up) Sagan and his wife recreating the closing fairground scene from Grease. Quite realistically it appeared, but no less cheesy than the original. And I’m sorry Peter, but Travolta could actually dance as well as comb his hair back so slickly.

Which goes to show just what a showman Peter Sagan is as well as truly sensational rider. In a blog post supposed to be about Bauke Mollema, Sagan has dominated the entire first paragraph! Typical of the man really. But despite all the fireworks going on at the front with Sagan and Froome pulling off one of the most remarkable breakaways of recent times during Stage 11, Mollema has been quietly going about his craft. The result of which is that in a GC race where many of the so called big names have fallen away, Mollema now finds himself in 5th position for Trek-Segafredo.

Can he keep it up?

There’s every chance he can sustain it as well barring any unfortunate incidents. Mollema is some climber when on his Trek Emonda and with the Alps to come, who says he can’t keep mixing it up with the big boys. In fact, maybe we all need to realise that Bauke Mollema is himself now one of the big boys.

Thanks to Sagan, Froome, Quintana and Cavendish, the spotlight has been elsewhere. But don’t be surprised if Mollema has something to say about how the Top 10 settle up this year on the Champs Elysee. A pretty impressive performance so far and great to see the red and white of Trek-Segafredo at the front of the peleton. Quietly does do it after all.
