Chris Froome maintains lead after Tour de France Stage 9
Tour De France Stage 9 started in glorious sunshine. It finished in a rain and hail storm that better resembled the set of a post apocalyptic CGI Hollywood blockbuster rather than a cycle race. Still, it was exciting nonetheless and Tom Dumoulin thoroughly deserved his win on the climb to Andorre Arcalis with Chris Froome retaining the overall lead.
The big news of the day was undoubtedly the sad retirement of Alberto Contador, though one can hardly blame him after suffering such a bad fall on the first day. There were great performances from Trek-Segrafredo rider Bauke Mollema (who now lies 7th in the General Classification) and Lotto NLJumbo rider George Bennett. Bennett managed 7th on Stage 9 despite what could have been a nasty collision with a spectator.
Monday 11th July is a rest day on the Tour or, as Gary Imlach put it on the highlights reel, a day now renamed as drying out day. It was pretty wet at the end, but it didn’t stop Chris Froome finishing really strongly and putting himself in a great position going into week 2.
